Welcome to the mind of Peter Rake, an emerging Australian author (who has taken his time to emerge!).

This heart felt rural novel, set in the Downs country of Central Queensland, follows the journey of a young man who finds himself coming to the attention of the big boss station owners. They can see a quality to the young Steve Williams that they admire. As an infatuation with a station owner's daughter blossoms, however, will Steve impress upon the big man enough for their relationship to have any chance?

With a crazed no-hoper stockman causing strife, wild boar pigs, dangerous roads and local police out for blood, Steve has many obstacles to overcome - but with the companionship of his special dog, Freda, he has the chance to become the man he didn't know he could become, and attract the love of a good woman.

Available on Amazon Kindle, Kobo and in paperback.

When Pete picks up a new pup from Borro down at the local pub, he hopes he has picked up a high bred working dog that will make the Overseer proud. Despite the endearing qualities of the little mutt, it's antics with sheep leave much to be desired and Pete is left to worry how long he'll be able to keep him, until a visitor to the station arrives and with him, new possibilities for the life of the pup.

When one half of an older couple passes away, it can seem as though the half that's left just exists until their time also comes. Sometimes though, the smallest things can make all the difference. In this sweet short story the prose reflects the lifestyle of the main protagonist and draws the reader into his mood, while the third person view allows you to view his life as an observer. A kind and honest man, he is an endearing character explored through gentle, quiet and affecting scenes.

Pete, as he was known to most folk, leaned against the rail fence on the out-station sheep yard. He had been watching the dust from the boss's Landrover as it approached. Three weeks had passed, and Pete felt a little resentful that his time alone was about to end.
This short story is a tale of a right of passage from boyhood to manhood.

Another day in the life of George 'Notty' Wormwood begins the same as any day before, but in over-hearing a conversation between two visitors to town, Notty sets out on an investigation that reveals much about himself, and the townspeople of Targaroo.

This short story by emerging Australian writer, Peter Rake, is a classic Australian tale told with an endearing mix of melancholy and wit.

  4. Thanks Peter, I just read your book about Tiger Williams and his life and loves; very enjoyable, the dialogue and events rang so true to life. They must be based on your own experiences and observations, to be so authentic. So good to stumble upon such a jewel of a book.
